I came across this several years ago. This is one of my favorite relatively unknown stories of the history of the United States. It's about a man named Joshua Abraham Norton, who declares himself Emperor of the United States (and protector of Mexico) in several letters he sent to some of the local newspapers in San Francisco in 1859, and few in his locale contested him on this astounding declaration. It's a somewhat sad, but very amazing story that I believe would be found enjoyable by all.
